How to load a LUT in the Blackmagic Camera app on iPhone

Blackmagic Camera can show a LUT on screen while you record Apple Log, so you judge exposure on a normal-looking picture and still keep the log file.

Use the 33-point file: the app takes 17- and 33-point LUTs.

Load the LUT

  1. Save the 33-point .cube file to your iPhone.Source

  2. Open Blackmagic Camera and tap the settings tab.Source

  3. In LUTs, tap Import LUT under LUT Selection and choose the file.Source

  4. Select it from the list of loaded LUTs.Source

Record log, watch Rec. 709

  1. In the record settings, set Color Space to Apple Log. What's listed depends on your iPhone.Source

  2. Pick a codec there too: ProRes or HEVC, depending on your iPhone.Source

  3. In LUTs, turn Display LUT on to see the LUT on screen.Source

  4. Leave Record LUT to Clip off to keep the LUT for monitoring only. Turn it on only if you want it recorded into your clips.Source

  5. On an HDMI monitor, use Settings > Monitor > HDMI Out and switch Display 3D LUT on.Source

Good to know

  • The app also has its own Apple Log to Rec. 709 LUT built in on supported iPhones.Source
  • Apple Log 2 (iPhone 17 Pro) uses different color primaries from Apple Log, so an Apple Log LUT is not made for Apple Log 2 footage.Source
  • Blackmagic doesn't say whether Record LUT to Clip bakes the LUT into the picture or stores it with the clip, or whether Apple Log 2 can be picked in the app.
