Sony camera won't load your LUT? What the FX30, FX3, ZV-E10 II and a7 V accept

Sony's Help Guides don't list the message itself, but they do spell out what the camera will import. A file that breaks any of these rules won't load.

What the camera accepts

A .cube file with a 17-point or 33-point grid. Sony lists no other size, so a 65-point LUT is not one it says it takes.Source

A file name of 63 single-byte alphanumeric characters or fewer, counting “.cube”.Source

The file in the right folder on the card: /Private/Sony/PRO/LUT on an SD card, or /Sony/PRO/LUT on a CFexpress Type A card.Source

The ZV-E10 II's guide gives the SD path, /Private/Sony/PRO/LUT, and the a7 V's gives both.Source

A LUT that converts from S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 or S-Gamut3/S-Log3, the footage the camera records. Up to 16 can be stored, as User1 to User16.Source

The usual reasons it fails

It's a 65-point file. Our free S-Log3 zip has a 33-point file for exactly this; load that one in the camera and keep the 65-point file for editing.

The name is long or has characters beyond plain letters and numbers. Rename it to something short, like SLOG3709.cube. On SD cards the camera shows names in the short 8.3 form anyway.Source

It's in the wrong folder, such as the root of the card. Sony only names the folders above.

It's built for a different camera's log (Apple Log, D-Log M, V-Log). Sony's cameras take LUTs made for S-Log3 input only.Source

Firmware: after an FX30 was updated from 5.00 to 5.01 with a user LUT registered, the LUT couldn't be applied; Sony's later update fixes it.Source

On the FX3, Sony asks you to re-register user LUTs before updating from 6.00 or 6.01 to 7.00.Source

Import it

On the FX30 and FX3: MENU > Exposure/Color > Color/Tone > Manage User LUTs > Import/Edit, pick a User slot, then Media, the card and the file, and OK.Source

Monitor with it, or record it

In Log shooting, Display LUT shows the LUT on the monitor while the camera still records S-Log3. Embed LUT File stores the LUT with the clip, and is locked off on SD and SDHC cards.Source

To record with the LUT applied, assign it to a picture profile, PPLUT1 to PPLUT4.Source

The a7 IV

The a7 IV's Help Guide, through firmware 6.00, has no user LUT import, so the LUT goes on in your editor instead.Source

To judge S-Log3 on the a7 IV's screen, use Gamma Display Assist; it changes only the display.Source
